Impermanence

Tokyo, Japan
2020 - 2022

In 2020, I had the opportunity to work in Tokyo, a city I had always wanted to visit. However, the COVID-19 pandemic emerged that same year, leaving me alone for the first time in a foreign country where I didn't speak the language. This led me to experience moments of loneliness that I had never experienced before in my life. As a result, I started a personal project that culminated in this series titled Impermanence.

It was never really clear when I started the series, but suddenly I found myself completely immersed in the idea of taking photographs that represented the increase in the connection that we, as a society, had with nature during that year. In moments when everything I saw on the internet seemed overwhelming, I took the opportunity to go out and contemplate or search for those moments that usually go unnoticed. To develop this series, I took photos in my most everyday moments of my day-to-day life, always carrying my camera with me.

This series was captured on my way to work, when visiting friends, on my train trips, and in the views from my window.

“Mexican artist, Natalie Sosa, explores Tokyo with a cautious yet inquisitive eye. Much of Removing the Veil of the Loneliest City began as a series of thoughts in March of 2020 as the pandemic brought the workd into hibernation. The resulting series became a year-long project that sought to tap into the emotionality of a city-center from a social behavior standpoint.” -
